Sound healing works with the subtle energetic vibrations in the body. Following the law of physics, we know that everything is in motion and everything has a measurable vibration, from the more obvious vibrations of a guitar string and other musical instruments, as well as everyday sounds heard by the human ear (from a soft whisper to a loud jet flying overhead) to the more subtle vibrations of the cells in the body. Sound healing works directly with the more subtle movements and vibrations in the body to enhance healing and overall relaxation, and bring a state of harmony and alignment back to all systems of our body and being.
Joshua Leeds refers to sound as a necessary staple and nutrient for the nervous system. He states that in part, the auditory system exists to charge the nervous system and that sound frequencies can be used to restore balance to our systems. We can see this in the way that a young child or infant is soothed by their caregiver’s voice or how the sound of ocean waves can instantly shift our mood and settle the nervous system.
Sounds produced through crystal and metal singing bowls, vocal toning and singing, the speaking voice, different instruments such as drums, and tuning forks have been used historically in sound healing. I currently primarily use quartz crystal singing bowls to generate sound in my treatment sessions and classes. Although, I am always continuing to explore and learn new modalities of sound to add to my offerings.
