Mindfulness in Schools

My students and I have been so fortunate to have Cyndi Miracle come into our class once a week and do her Mindfulness lessons. She volunteered a few years back and I was so grateful when I ran into her in the community and was able to talk to her about the increased level of stress and anxiety I was seeing in the first grade. State tests are now more frequent and computerized. Kindergarteners and first graders are expected to sit at a screen and take reading tests that can be frustrating and stressful especially since they don’t know how to use the keyboard.

Cyndi graciously and kindly offered to come back and do some more mindfulness to see if she could help ease some of this added stress and anxiety in the first grade classroom. I could see an immediate difference in not only the students’ stress levels but my own on the days she came in to work with us.

The kids are using the strategies she has taught them for breathing and calming down not only during the test but when lining up or when they have to sit quietly and are struggling. One strategy I see them using is the finger breathing. They pause whatever it is they are doing and take time to breathe so they can reset, refocus and approach the matter in a calmer state. One student even shared that at home she was using the finger breathing to help her go back to sleep when she wakes up in the middle of the night.

I have also been so fortunate to have Cyndi volunteer her Mindfulness lessons in my daughter’s third grade class. This has helped me as a parent to have conversations with her at home about how she is handling stressful tests, friend issues, and other things at school that cause her to be sad, frustrated, or disappointed. We talk about the strategies she is learning from Cyndi and how she can use them in the different scenarios at school to help her approach them in a more positive way. These lessons and tools have been a great tool for me as a parent to use and practice at home with my family. I have seen some improvements in my daughter’s outlook and approach to situations or events that were causing negative reactions.

I truly believe that Cyndi’s lessons can make such a difference in our classrooms, homes, and our communities. Schools are overloaded with serious issues that are impossible for one or two counselors to help solve. Giving students the tools and support to be able to deal with their own issues that come up helps us all to have a calmer more peaceful environment where much more learning and growth can take place. I highly recommend Cyndi’s Mindfulness lessons to be used as a way to support any child, individual, family, school, office, or community. Her lessons have helped my students, my daughter, and myself to approach stress in a much healthier manner. We have all been able to grow and learn so much thanks to the tools she has given us. We are all forever grateful she has shared her Mindfulness knowledge and skills with us!

I just wanted to thank you again for all that you did for our classes. I appreciated your patience and all of the lessons you taught. After your final day, I had many requests to use the jar or bell (as I did before your last day), and quite a few students asking hopefully that you would come back in again. One of my students had been absent for 2 weeks following the death of his little sister. On Thursday he was having a tough time and got mad at another student. I was giving him some space to calm down and he came up and asked to use the jar for a little bit. When he brought it back he was calmed down and ready to join us. I just wanted you to know the impact that your lessons had, whether that was apparent or not. The population in my classes come from a very hard background and the stories of them fleeing for their lives are enough to move me to tears. I am forever grateful that there are people such as yourself who are willing to try and help them to find ways to deal with that and other issues they may be facing. I will continue to use mindfulness in my classroom and would like to thank you for all of your time and resources that you gave me.

I am a huge advocate for the Mindfulness program in our classrooms and the entire Boise community. We are so blessed and lucky to have Cyndi Miracle dedicate her knowledge and time to our classroom on a weekly basis. As a teacher and a parent who has a child in a Second Grade class here at Riverside (receiving mindfulness weekly from Cyndi), I am truly grateful. My son is coming home and venturing out into the community really utilizing many of these important concepts that mindfulness teaches. I think this program should be a part of our school curriculum and is beneficial to all students, parents, families, etc.

I am forever thankful to the opportunity to have this program taught to our First Grade class and to my son’s Second Grade class.
